Ok people – let’s talk about all things organization. Because truly, who doesn’t love it? Honestly, keeping my room clean and organized was never a true priority of mine until I moved into a bigger house. When I lived in smaller apartments in New York, I was just cramming stuff into every nook and cranny I could find in my tiny little apartment. Yes, sometimes that included the kitchen cabinets (my winter boots were very happy there, though had a light pantry fragrance). Now that I have more space, I am ALL about staying organized and have a few tips and trick up my sleeve to keep your space looking clean!
Tip #1 – If you can’t see it, you won’t use it.
Truly, if I can’t see that I have something I will completely forget about it and it will just sit in the depths of the corner untouched. I have to make sure that when I put stuff in drawers/shelves it is still organized so when I open it, I can see the exact products and jewelry that I have so I actually remember it!
Tip #2 – Use your Jewelry as a way to decorate your space.
I LOVE jewelry – especially huge, colorful, over the top costume jewelry. Until recently, I was still using old storage boxes and hangers that did nothing to dress-up my space. I went to the Container Store and invested in some nice acrylic organizers that help display my jewelery in a beautiful way.
Tip #3 – Make your closet your little boutique.
I set my closet up so it looks like a little store. No I don’t have a huge, beautiful walk-in closet but I set it up in ways that make me feel like I am shopping for pieces when I put my looks together. My sunglass holder for example is a great way to display all of my sunglasses in a clean and organized way so I feel like i’m going on a little shopping spree (don’t judge, it’s the little things, k?)
Tip #4 – If it’s not immediately functional, You aren’t going to use it.
This is something my boss at my first internship taught me and it has always stuck with me. If it’s not immediately functional, it’s never going to be – hence you will never use it. For example, I used to be in charge of organizing the beauty product closet at my internship and if the drawer of the lipstick couldn’t perfectly open, then it wasn’t the functional organization option and I had to try something else. I know it may seem simple but it’s always a good reminder when you are working to make everything perfectly fit.
Tip #5 – Always, Keep, Editing.
Truthfully, I have always held onto jewelry for weird amounts of time because I thought it didn’t take up too much space. But it actually ends up piling up and taking up much more space than needed. The answer to that? Always, Keep, Editing. You don’t need to do one big haul or even an entire clean out, but if you do it piece by piece you will edit down to the jewelry that you actually wear so you don’t become a weird hoarder.
